Today is a special day for me. Here is a short video I created to announce the song of my first cover song, Blessings.
Learning how to record this song from start to finish has been challenging. I definitely spent more time and money then I needed to on this production. I really wanted the recording to sound professional, so I went to an actual recording studio in Sacramento, California and worked with a sound engineer in a controlled, stable environment. It was really nice to have him manage extra reverb for me to get into the spirit of the song. I was surprised at how he wanted to record different comps (takes) of the song. He asked me to sing the song...and I ended up singing it like 6 or 7 times. I felt nervous with the first few takes and by the 5th-7th time I was able to relax a bit and add more feeling. Unfortunately, I had been singing so hard and I wasn't used to just being in a small room and singing, that my voice became scratchy and the takes with the most feeling had some significant artifact. I was charged extra for some extra vocal edits and mastering that I wasn't aware I would have to pay, so I ended up paying double for the recording studio visit. Overall, it came out....okay. I wasn't happy with it and didn't feel like it could meet the cut I had for sharing it on apple itunes and spotify.
So...I was curious...
I went back home and tried again through my home studio. (I had been trying to learn how to do my own audio engineering, but realized that it is TRULY A SCIENCE and what I really wanted was to produce music.) I asked my mentor about my recording and he was able to take a look at my track from home and give me feedback about what went wrong at the recording studio. I felt like the sound quality was just as good through my rode NT1A https://amzn.to/45ER8bg and my Scarlett Solo Focusrite https://amzn.to/4lVqShH.
I couldn't believe it.
So, having a bit more courage, and ignoring the fact that the money I just dropped at the studio was completely wasted for the final recording, I decided to do a really quick run through on a Sunday morning right before I left for church. I felt more relaxed and contemplative as I recorded this take....my sound engineer asked for raw vocal (completely unedited...and so I sent over this take a few days later that wasn't even recorded from my closet, but my bedroom. I wanted to just bury my head in the sand when I was thinking of him listening to this completely bare, unedited version of me singing kind of on a whim. I was skeptical that it would turn out, but he said that he could work with it. I was pleasantly surprised when he sent me the final track completely mastered and felt like it was a good place to start.
